General information

About teeth straightening with invisible aligners, so-called "clear aligners."

Clear aligners are transparent, removable dental aligners used to treat mild to moderate tooth and jaw misalignments. They are usually made of transparent plastic. This makes them more popular than fixed or loose braces. smileunion offers you professional clear aligners for your perfect smile.

The advantages of clear aligners

Specially developed for adult treatment, our smileunion aligners correct your teeth particularly gently. Brackets, screws or clasps are no longer necessary. Instead of metal, our aligners are made of plastic. For this reason, they are hardly visible and therefore, do not stand out in everyday life. They can be removed at any time and are easy to clean.

Is treatment with a removable aligner suitable for children and adults?

Treatment with our clear aligners is possible from the age of 18 and is, therefore, unfortunately not suitable for children.

The treatment

Duration of treatment and daily wearing time

The duration of treatment is individually adapted to you and depends on the severity of the treatment. After we have received your dental impressions, it takes about 1.5 weeks until we have created your personal 3D treatment plan. This includes the duration and cost of your treatment. With our 3D simulation, you will also get a before and after comparison of your teeth and jaws. This is all without obligation, and your treatment will not begin until you have agreed to your treatment plan. We recommend a daily wearing time of 22 hours for an ideal result. You should remove the aligners for eating and drinking (except for water). Regular cleaning of the aligners also contributes significantly to your oral hygiene. This can easily be done with toothpaste and your toothbrush. You will find detailed instructions on how to wear the aligners in your treatment plan, which you can refer to at any time. The number of aligners you need will also be individually adjusted to your malocclusion. As a rule, you should wear each aligners for a fortnight; in individual cases, the wearing time may vary. After that, you change them on your own. You can discuss all these steps individually with your dentist and also contact our customer service at any time with questions and problems. In any case, you should keep us informed every six weeks with photos of your current dental status.

Types of malocclusions

A malocclusion is the incorrect arrangement of at least one tooth in the upper and/or lower jaw. This becomes visible in the form of rotations or misalignments and, in addition to aesthetic effects, sometimes also has health effects. There are different types of malocclusions that can also occur in adults who have already worn fixed braces as teenagers. These can include the following malocclusions:

Overbite

The upper jaw is proportionally larger than the lower jaw, or the lower jaw is proportionally too small. This gives the impression that the lower jaw is set further back. This also affects the distance between the incisors, which is normally only about two millimetres and is considerably larger in this case.

Underbite

The teeth of the lower jaw sit further forward than those of the upper jaw. Visually, this gives the impression that the upper jaw is set back, and the chin is far forward. This is often a genetically determined malocclusion.

Crossbite

The side teeth do not bite together correctly. They are either too far inwards in the upper jaw or too far outwards in the lower jaw. There are three types of crossbite: the head bite, the unilateral crossbite and the bilateral crossbite.

Deep bite

Normally, the upper incisors cover the lower ones when biting together. In a deep bite, the lower incisors touch the palate or even bite into it. This is, therefore, a strongly vertical overbite.

Open bite

There is a gap between the anterior and posterior teeth, and they do not meet correctly as a result. This affects the anterior and posterior teeth in particular.

Which malocclusions can be treated with aligners?

The treatment with smileunion aligners depends on the complexity of your malocclusion. Our aligners are effectively used to correct crossbites, headbites, open bites, crowding, gap bites and deep bites. However, you should discuss the correction of an overbite with an orthodontist. We also treat individual jaws. For the upper jaw, this is generally possible without any problems, for the lower jaw, your case will be examined individually by us.

To find out whether your malocclusion is suitable for correction with our aligners, order our impression box without obligation for only 290 kr. We will determine the severity of your malocclusion (easy/medium/complex) and create your 3D treatment plan if you are suitable for treatment.

Retainer

The term retainer comes from the English verb to retain, which means to hold or stabilise. In dentistry, retainers are therefore understood as tooth stabilisers that are used in the aftercare of orthodontic treatment. They prevent the teeth from moving back to their original position after the treatment.

Depending on the malocclusion to be treated, either a fixed or removable retainer can be used. A fixed retainer describes a thin wire made of metal that is permanently attached to the back of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. This is often the case after the treatment of complex malocclusions to prevent the teeth from shifting again.

At smileunion, we usually work with removable retainers in the form of a retainer aligners made of plastic. Especially in the first months after the therapy, the retainers should be worn permanently and subsequently always at night.

Our price already includes the first pair of retainers. Two years after treatment, you will benefit from your health insurance company covering the costs of follow-up treatment with removable retainers.

This is not the case with fixed retainer wires. The health insurance provider only covers the costs for a degree 3 crowding in the lower jaw.
